In my more youthful days I’d go on vacation with a huge bunch of friends every August, and we would have a week of hedonistic chaos. They were superb times. We would rent two or three villas in Corfu, and every evening one of the villas used to be the venue for a party.
Generally by the end of the vacation there were folk from all over the town coming to the raves, holiday-makers and locals, and on our last day we’d unfailingly have a big tidy-up, and everybody had to lend a hand.
Once we had finished, you would never have suspected the carnage that had taken place over the course of our trip!
This November I’ll be flying out to visit my parents in Lanzarote. They moved to the island once they had stopped working, and they are really enjoying the lifestyle.
The mortgage has been paid off, so they are able to just unwind and spend their golden years in the sun. It’s odd to see my dad so relaxed: he was always stressed previously due to his work. Perhaps there is hope for me in the future!

Now that I’m older, I like tranquil vacations, far from the busy hotels and fellow holidaymakers. If I can, I like to go someplace with beautiful scenery, so that I can draw. I’ve had a number of marvellous vacations in the hills of the European continent, and I adore the tranquillity of being by myself, in the midst of the countryside, simply immersing myself in the ambience. It’s so unlike the chaotic pace of living back home, where I’m always dashing from one place to another.
A few years ago I started angling, which is amazingly relaxing. My friend had told me for years that there is nothing better than being on a riverbank, holding on for a bite. I couldn’t understand the appeal, truth be told, however eventually I gave it a go. And I must say that I adore it. We go most weekends, and though I throw almost all of the fish back, I normally keep one to grill on the barbeque for tea.
